Robot vision inspection cell

Across modern manufacturing, there is a clear shift towards automating production processes and related quality checks. The goal is to guarantee component quality in a cost-efficient way while optimising production performance.

Machine vision plays a major role in that transition. Because of the wide variation in components and production processes, there is strong demand for robust machine-vision algorithms and practical implementation methods.

While many setups rely on fixed cameras and moving parts, the concept can also be reversed. To explore and develop the potential of that approach, the client needed a mechatronic setup that incorporated not only functional requirements, but also user and safety requirements.

We designed and built a custom robot vision inspection cell that integrated the following:

• Transportability, allowing the setup to be moved quickly and efficiently to external locations, for example trade-show demonstrations.
• A safety concept that supports both an optimal user experience and clear presentation/demo purposes.
• Integration of a cobot to mount and move the camera with the required freedom of movement.
• Required LED drivers and multiple lighting connection points throughout the cell, ensuring flexibility and efficient development workflows.
• A rotational positioning mechanism to align components optimally relative to camera and lighting.
